Initial Clinical Assessment

€195

Every assessment pathway begins with a detailed initial clinical assessment. The Initial Clinical Assessment forms the foundation of the diagnostic report.

Where a full assessment proceeds, the €195 already paid forms part of the total fee.

When a full assessment is not clinically recommended, you will be signposted, supported and given a clear plan for appropriate next steps, support or services based on the clinical evidence collected.

Clear & Structured

A clear and well-organised assessment pathway designed to help you understand each stage of the process, from your Initial Clinical Assessment through to feedback, recommendations, and diagnostic outcomes.

Thorough & Reliable

Assessments are guided by recognised diagnostic criteria, structured methods, psychometric information, and careful clinical judgement to support a clear and reliable understanding of your experiences.

Supportive Process

OpenMind provides a personalised assessment experience, with clear communication, detailed feedback, practical recommendations, and guidance about the most appropriate next step.

────  From Assessment To Clarity

Personal, clinician-led assessments for adults aged 18+.

OpenMind Neurodevelopmental Assessments provides careful ADHD and autism assessments that combine clinical experience, peer-reviewed research, recognised assessment tools, gold-standard diagnostic criteria, and Psychological Society of Ireland professional practice standards.

Every assessment begins with pre-assessment information and an Initial Clinical Assessment. This gives time to understand your story, current difficulties, past experiences, developmental history, and any overlapping factors that may affect diagnosis.

The aim is to recommend the right assessment pathway for your individual needs, not to rush you into a one-size-fits-all process. You work with one clinician from the Initial Clinical Assessment through to the diagnostic assessment, feedback, and report. Contact Us

────  Personally led by Dr. James Cunningham

OpenMind is led by Dr. James Cunningham.

Dr. Cunningham is the sole clinician in the service, meaning your assessment is personally managed from Initial Clinical Assessment through to diagnostic assessment, feedback, and report.

This keeps the process joined up, clearly communicated, and clinically consistent. You are not passed between different clinicians or moved through a high-volume assessment pathway. Key expertise includes:

  • PhD in Psychology from Ulster University with expertise in psychometric assessment and diagnostic formulation
  • Specialist ADHD and autism assessment practice, including ADOS-2 and ADI-R training
  • Published researcher, ORCID contributor, and peer reviewer for psychology journals
  • Applied experience across neurodevelopmental, mental health, and community settings
  • Clinician-led assessment, feedback, and report writing

────  What OpenMind Means

Understanding the full picture before reaching a conclusion.

OpenMind means starting with curiosity, not assumptions.

Autism is a spectrum. This means autistic people can have very different strengths, difficulties, communication styles, sensory experiences, routines, interests, and support needs. No two autistic people present in exactly the same way.

ADHD can also look very different from person to person. Some people mainly struggle with attention and organisation. Others struggle more with impulsivity, restlessness, emotional regulation, planning, procrastination, or follow-through. Many experience a mix of these.

People also arrive with different backgrounds, life experiences, developmental histories, and mental health challenges. Anxiety, trauma, depression, OCD, substance use, sleep difficulties, cognitive concerns, grief, stress, and previous diagnoses can sometimes overlap with ADHD or autism.

At OpenMind, the aim is not to force a diagnosis or rush to a conclusion. The aim is to listen carefully, understand the full picture, and decide whether a full ADHD assessment, autism assessment, or combined AuDHD assessment is clinically appropriate. Where a full assessment is not the right next step, clear clinical guidance and recommendations will be provided based on the information discussed during the Initial Clinical Assessment.

Personally Led, Not Conveyor-Belt

One clinician. One clear process. A more personal assessment experience.

OpenMind is intentionally small and personally led. You work directly with Dr. James Cunningham throughout the entire assessment process, from the initial clincial assessment and clinical interviews through to diagnostic formulation, feedback, and report writing. This approach helps reduce miscommunication, provides greater continuity, and ensures your experiences are understood within the context of your individual history, circumstances, and needs. The result is a clear, consistent, and connected assessment journey from beginning to end.

A Thorough & Individualised Approach

Every assessment is built around your history, development, current difficulties, daily functioning, and clinically relevant information. Rather than relying on questionnaires alone, assessments draw on recognised diagnostic criteria, structured tools, psychometric information, and professional clinical judgement to support a clear outcome.

────  The OpenMind Process

A careful process before a full assessment begins.

The OpenMind pathway is designed to make sure the assessment is appropriate before you commit to the full process.

1. Enquiry or Booking

You contact OpenMind to make an enquiry or request an Initial Clinical Assessment.

2. Initial Clinical Assessment Booking

Once your Initial Clinical Assessment is booked and the fee has been paid, you will receive screening and background forms to complete before your appointment.

v

3. Initial Clinical Assessment

The Initial Clinical Assessment provides an opportunity to discuss your concerns, history, current difficulties, and whether an ADHD, autism, or AuDHD assessment is the most appropriate next step.

U

4. Comprehensive Diagnostic Assessment

If a full assessment is recommended, you complete a diagnostic assessment pathway
tailored to your presentation. This may involve an ADHD assessment, autism assessment, or combined AuDHD assessment.

The assessment considers current presentation, developmental history, functional impact, background information, DSM-5-TR criteria, recognised assessment methods, and relevant tools where clinically indicated.

h

5. Feedback and Diagnostic Report

You receive a feedback session, diagnostic formulation, recommendations, and a written
report. The feedback session gives time to discuss the outcome, understand the clinical reasoning, and ask questions.

The report summarises the full assessment picture and provides tailored
recommendations.

6. Online Where Appropriate. Face-to-Face Where Needed.

Many adult ADHD and autism assessments can be completed online when clinically suitable and enough information is available.

OpenMind is not an online-only model. Face-to-face or extended assessment may be
recommended where the clinical picture is more complex, unclear, or requires additional
information.
